Of all the animals handled at the Hayward Animal Shelter, less than 40% are adopted, redeemed by their owners, or relocated. The goal is having fewer animals impounded and more pets redeemed by their owners.
If your pet has been impounded at the Hayward Animal Shelter you will need the following to redeem your pet:
- current driver's license
- proof of pet ownership
- proof of current rabies and license
- dog leash or cat carrier
- cash, check or credit card to pay for the impound fees
Pet Impounding gives information about shelter boarding fees and related charges for an impounded pet, and how to prevent a pet from getting loose. Fees to redeem your pet range from $40 to $150 or more. You are assessed boarding fees for each day the animal is at the shelter. If your pet is currently in the shelter, contact the shelter immediately.
If your pet was:
- involved in an incident where it was acting vicious
- bit someone, or
- killed another animal
you will have to talk to the Animal Control Officer who picked up your pet to discuss the case and what you will have to do to get your pet back. Your pet may have to be held for an observation or quarantine period. Board fees will be charged.
