Prior to start of work on a commercial or industrial building, a Building Permit and other related permits must be obtained. The Applicant must apply for each permit separately.
Also, visit with Planning and Fire staff in the Permit Center to determine if other actions are required before applying for a Building Permit. Fees vary depending on scope of work and related factors (Master Fee Schedule).
Only a California-licensed contractor or authorized agent may apply for the Building or Fire Permits. Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical Permit. A City of Hayward business license is also required.
Steps include:
- Obtain verification that all Planning requirements are completed;
- Submit a Building Permit Application and required building plans, calculations and related documents to Building Division for review;
- Pay the plan review fee when the materials are accepted for review (plan check) (does not mean plans conform to relevant codes);
- Submittals are reviewed by all pertinent departments and a punchlist of any items (punchlist) that are missing, incomplete or inconsistent with the relevant codes is given to the applicant for correction;
- Applicant returns nthe required number of revised plans along with the itemized responses as indicated on the punchlist letter to the Building Division;
- Permit is issued and balance of fees are paid
