The purpose of an Electrical Permit is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from the hazards arising from the use of electricity.
An Electrical Permit is required for:
- installation of electrical conductors and equipment
- new service and service change
- alterations, repairs, and replacement of electrical wiring and equipment
For owner-occupied residences, the owner or contractor may apply for the Electrical Permit; for other categories of work, a licensed electrical or general contractor may apply.
Steps include:
- if construction requires a Building Permit - get a Building Permit before submitting an Electrical Permit Application;
- for work not needing a Building Permit (limited to installation and alteration of electrical system) - submit completed Electrical Permit Application and required fees;
- Electrical Permit is issued at the counter on the day of application (15 to 30 minutes);
- call for an electrical inspection (510-583-4148) when the work is completed and ready for inspection. (The job card on the reverse side of the Electrical Permit lists required inspections at each stage of construction).
