For construction of a multi-family dwelling, you will need a Building Permit, as well as Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fire Permits. Each permit is applied for separately.
The Building Official approves all Building Permits. The Fire Marshal approves all Fire Permits. Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing Permits are issued by the Building Division counter staff in the Permit Center. Fees vary depending upon the size of the dwelling and other factors.
Steps include:
- Get written verification from Planning that all planning actions are completed.
- Submit a Building Permit Application and required drawings, calculations and other documents to Building Division for review.
- Pay the plan review fee once the materials are accepted as complete (does not mean plans conform to relevant codes).
- Submittals are reviewed by all pertinent departments and the applicant is given a list of items (punchlist) for correction that are missing, incomplete or inconsistent with the relevant codes.
- Applicant returns the required number of revised plans along with the itemized responses as indicated on the punchlist letter to the Building Division.
- After final review, the permit is issued and the applicant pays the fee balance.
