All storage rack installations for any industrial or commercial use that are more than 6-feet high require a Building Permit prior to installation, and the submittal of structural calculations.
High Piled Storage Annual Fire Permit is required for rack installations, and is issued separately by the Fire Department when storage areas exceed 500 square feet and have commodities stored over 12 feet in height.
Special hazardous commodities, such as tires, plastics, and some flammable liquids, are considered high piled storage, even if as low as 6 feet.
Steps include:
1. Submit a Building Permit Application and required drawings and materials to Building Division for review for completeness.
2. Pay the required fees: - Planning review fee once the materials are accepted as complete. This does not mean the plans conform to all relevant codes. - Building Permit fees - vary depending upon the value of the installation. - Fire Department review fee.
3. After review by Building and Fire, you will get a punchlist of items for correction (items missing, incomplete or inconsistent with the relevant codes).
4. Return the required number of revised plans along with the itemized responses as indicated on the punchlist letter to the Building Division.
5. If all corrections are complete, you pay the fee balance, and the permit is issued. During storage rack installation, there will be inspections by both Building (510-583-4148) and Fire inspectors (510-583-4921).
