The City of Hayward’s Shopping Cart Ordinance requires retail stores using one or more shopping carts, and with 5000 or more square feet of enclosed space:
- to install locking wheels on their carts, or
- to implement alternative measures to reduce the presence of their carts beyond their premises
Shoppers without access to a vehicle are encouraged to use their own foldable utility carts for carrying their purchases home instead of using a store cart.
To request pickup of stray shopping carts:
- call the phone number listed on the cart’s identification sign;
- submit a service request or call the Street Maintenance Division at 510-881-7745.
