The Hayward Fire Department, as an agent of the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (Regional Board), is the lead implementing agency in the investigation, cleanup and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination by releases from Leaking Underground Fuel Tank (LUFT) systems in the City of Hayward.
LUFT site contamination cases in Hayward may also be assigned by the Fire Department to the Alameda County Department of Environmental Health or to the Alameda County Water District for lead agency oversight. Cases in Hayward that do not involve LUFTs are administered directly by any one of the Regional Board, the Environmental Health Department, the Water District, or the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Information on site contamination cases is maintained on the State's GeoTracker database.
Spills of hazardous materials and illegal dumping of hazardous waste that may impact soil or groundwater should be reported to the Fire Department.
