Adult Literacy Tutoring

Teach someone to read...Change a life!

Literacy is the key to independence, self-sufficiency and pride. Help empower someone by providing them with the tools needed to get back on track. A few hours a week can change someone's life - and your life, too.

Literacy Plus, Hayward Public Library's adult literacy program, will conduct a free training for new volunteer tutors. Volunteers must attend a New Tutor Information Session, followed by a Tutor Training class.

Bring or mail your completed Application to the Main Hayward Library, 835 C Street, Hayward 94541. For additional information, visit the Literacy Plus web site or the Library News & Events blog, or enter a Volunteering at the Library Service Request.

  • Literacy Tutor Qualifications

Tutors must be 18 or older, speak English clearly, and have good reading and writing skills. You do not need a teaching background to be a tutor.
Tutors must also commit to 2 to 4 hours of tutoring a weekfor at least six months. All tutor applicants must also pass a background check, and fully participate in the tutor training sessions.
