Signs are regulated by the City to achieve a harmonious and pleasing environment through compliance with adopted standards for size, height, number, location, and design.
A sign permit is required for most signs. Some small signs, small window signs and change of copy on existing legal signs may not require a permit. Most signs can be approved administratively in one day. Signs that require engineering may take additional time.
Special caution: Do not order or install any sign until you have an approved sign permit.
How to Apply for a Sign Permit
Steps include:
- refer to the Sign Ordinance in the Hayward Municipal Code about size, location and number of signs allowed according to the parcel zoning;
- contact a Planner to determine whether your sign requires a permit and building or electrical permits, and the costs involved;
- submit a completed application, filing fee, and three sets of plans (elevations, plot plan, size, height, setbacks and materials of all signs drawn to scale) to Planning;
- if sign request does not comply with sign regulations, the Planner will suggest changes before giving approval;
- consult a Building Inspector about the need for a building or electrical permit (will require completion of separate permit forms);
- pay permit fees at the Revenue cashier;
- return applications,with proof of fee payment, to the Planner for review;
- The Planner staff will issue the sign permit, with stamped set of plans.
