The Hayward Reserve Police Officer Program is a volunteer organization founded in 1957 to supplement full time, paid police officers.
Reserve Officers volunteer their time.
They conduct a varity of activities that are usually performed by sworn officers. Some examples are; assist with traffic and crowd control at large civic functions; serve arrest warrants; conduct random audits for compliance with sex registrants; supplement daily activities that our regular sworn beat officers are engaged in everyday.
Reserve Police Officers are appointed to one of three levels.
- Level III - These officers perform duties that are not likely to result in physical arrests. Preparation includes both classroom (162 hours) and field training.
- Level II - These officers perform general law enforcement duties under the supervision of a full time peace officer or Level I reserve officer. Preparation includes classroom (386 hours) and field training (216 hours).
- Level I - These officers can perform the same duties as a regular, full-time paid police officer. Preparation includes the Police Academy (664 hours) and field training (480 hours).
