Inspectors and detectives assigned to the Special Victims Unit (SVU) investigate the following types of cases:
Child Abuse – physical, sexual or mental abuse and neglect. Investigators work closely with the police department’s Youth and Family Services Bureau, social workers from Children and Family Services (CPS), and the CALICO (Child Abuse Listening, Interviewing and Coordinating) Center.
Domestic Violence – assault by intimate partner, co-parent, co-habitant (current or former); Includes restraining order violations, stalking, criminal threats, spousal rape and other related crimes. Investigators work closely with the police department’s Youth and Family Services Bureau and victim advocates from Shelters Against Violent Environments (SAVE).
Missing Juveniles – Juveniles / children who are missing, either voluntarily or under suspicious circumstances; this includes runaways, parental abductions and stranger abductions
Rape and Related Sex Crimes – sexual acts committed against someone’s will by means of force, violence or duress, or if done while the victim was unconscious, incoherent, asleep or otherwise incapacitated.
Registered Sex Offenders – Records are maintained on all registered sex offenders living in the City of Hayward. See Megan’s Law website for specific information. Convicted sex offenders who are not in compliance with sexual registration laws are investigated.
