Most street lights in Hayward are owned by the City. Therefore, requests to repair a street light and to request a street light are to be directed to City staff. However, street lights located within certain new developments are not owned by the City. Please contact your homeowners’ association for details on whether or not street lights within your development are privately or publicly maintained.
If there is a street light outage, malfunction or damage, write down the street light identifying pole number that is posted on the pole and report the problem either through the service request form at the bottom of this page or by contacting Public Works staff at the phone number listed below.
Residents may request the installation of a new streetlight so long as there is an existing PG and E pole in place. To request a new street light, please fill out and submit a service request form located at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you may also submit a written request through the mail.
Requests are to contain the following:
- your name, address, and reason for requesting a streetlight installation;
- exact location (street address) of the requested streetlight (eg., the pole between 792 and 796 on the south side of Soto Road);
- pole number on the existing pole if any (generally mounted on the pole just above eye-level);
- pole numbers for the adjacent existing streetlights within 400 feet on both sides of the pole of the requested streetlight;
- drawing (on a separate sheet) showing the location of the requested streetlight, street width, and distance of the existing streetlights to the requested streetlight;
- petition with the names, addresses, and signatures of residents on both sides of the street within 150 feet of the proposed streetlight who support the installation of the new street light.
