Here are the transportation projects which Measure B ½ cent sales tax funds have supported in Hayward in Fiscal Year 2009. These funds were approved by voters in 2000:
Paratransit Program
The City of Hayward Measure B Paratransit Program provides low-cost “door-to-door” transportation services to persons who are unable to use other forms of private or public transportation independently due to a disability or medical condition. This program supplements and compliments (not replaces) other available paratransit services.
To be eligible for this service, one must be 18 years old or older and reside in Hayward or one of the unincorporated areas adjacent to Hayward (including Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Ashland, Cherryland or unincorporated San Leandro). To apply, contact the Hayward Paratransit Program Coordinator at 510-583-4230.
Improving Hayward’s Streets, Signals, and Sidewalks
During Fiscal Year 2009, Measure B funded over $4 million of street, road, bicycle and pedestrian improvements in Hayward. These monies were used to rehabilitate, slurry seal and overlay streets throughout Hayward as well as install new sidewalk and bicycle lanes in certain sections of the City. Funds were also used to install speed monitoring devices in select locations throughout the City as well as install ADA-compliant push buttons on traffic signals.
Improvements Planned in FY 2010
Measure B will continue to fund improvements in Fiscal Year 2010. It is estimated that those projects will total over $3.9 million and include:
- Another pavement rehabilitation project;
- Completion of a project to construct new sidewalks on critical pedestrian routes along sections of Berry Avenue from Soto Road to Whitman Street;
- New and upgraded bike lanes, as well as the construction of new sidewalks, on critical pedestrian routes along sections of D Street, Cypress Street, and Western Boulevard;
- Completion of the reconstruction of pavement along Westview Way;
- The installation of additional speed monitoring devices; and
- Continuation of an annual project to install countdown timers, ADA-compliant push buttons and audible signal devices at various intersections throughout the City.
Additional Measure B projects totaling over $19.5 million are proposed in the City of Hayward’s ten-year Capital Improvement Program.
