The City of Hayward, as a cooperative effort with the Hayward Unified School District and the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, celebrates Arbor Day each year. Because of the unique nature of this collaboration, Hayward's Arbor Day is rarely held on the same day as the National or State Arbor Days.
Arbor Day has been held in Hayward since 1985. Since 1989, the celebrations have been held at a Hayward school and a Hayward park. Each year one school is chosen to host the celebration. The date of celebration is chosen to accommodate the school's schedule.
Activities planned for each year depend upon that school’s preferences. An example of a school activity is a student-created Arbor Day Poster. On the day of the celebration, a City proclamation is read and a Tree City Award is presented to the City by the California State Forestry Department.
In past years Hayward's Arbor Day Celebration has included a Community Faire with information booths, tree plantings at the school, the park, and along the street. Each year the City, School District, and Park District decide on the details of the celebration.
