You may request to have the roots cut along the edge of the sidewalk if it appears that the roots of a Street tree are damaging the sidewalk, curb, or gutter. Root pruning may reduce the potential for future sidewalk damage. Root pruning can be scheduled through the City's Landscape Maintenance Division at no charge to the property owner. Root pruning begins in spring and ends in the fall due to weather conditions.
After a service request is made:
- the location is inspected for the following:
- amount of damage - tree condition - tree species tolerance to root pruning - anticipated effectiveness of root pruning - location of utilities - presence or absence of expansion room for the trunk and root crown - availability of room for our root pruning equipment.
Because of these factors, not all trees are candidates for root pruning, and the tree may need to be removed.
- Root pruning is typically scheduled within 6 months. To minimize the impact to the tree in terms of root loss and stability, root pruning is only done on the sidewalk side of the tree.
- If a car is parked in front of the tree when the work is scheduled, a “No Parking” area will be posted for the next workday.
- Raised sidewalk or curb and gutter damage is referred to the Street Maintenance Division for patching.
