City street trees are scheduled for trimming based upon geographical area, citizen request, or emergencies. All tree trimming is done according to industry standards, meaning that trees are not topped. Trimming of street trees can be scheduled through the Landscape Maintenance Division at no charge to the adjacent property owner. If a car is parked in front of the tree when the work is scheduled, a “No Parking” area will be posted for the next workday.
Purpose of trimming is to:
- minimize safety hazards
- provide clearance for vehicles and pedestrians
- improve the health of trees
- control tree’s shape and size.
- Trimming by Geographic Area:
There are three tree crews assigned two days a week to trim street trees in the City's 10 tree maintenance districts, also know as block tree trimming. A crew completes all trimming in one district before proceeding to another district. It takes about 24 months to complete each district. Average trimming cycle is 15 years.
- Resident Trimming Request:
A resident may request that a tree be trimmed earlier than a district’s block trimming schedule. Tree crews are scheduled the first week of each month to address these calls. The typical backlog is up to 6 months.
- Business Trimming Request:
If a tree is blocking a business sign, the business owner may request that the tree be trimmed. The sign will be cleared so long as the health and balance of the tree is not compromised. If feasibile, the preferred approach is to relocate the business sign.
Staff is available to discuss with the business owner ways to replace or install a new sign to avoid future tree/sign conflicts.
- Emergency Trimming
Trimming a tree for high-voltage power line clearance is required by state law. These trimming requests are done only by Pacific Gas and Electric Company contractors. For resident and business non-emergency tree trimming services please contact the Landscape Maintenance Division at 510-583-8906 or submit a request online.
For high-voltage power line tree clearance services, contact: Pacific Gas and Electric at 800-743-5000.
