The Landscape Maintenance Division will plant trees in the planting strip along the street at no charge, even if there has never been a tree planted previously. A tree can be planted in any planting area between the curb and sidewalk, provided there is enough room.
Not all species of trees are offered in every tree district. All trees offered for planting are selected to be appropriate for the site. This has several benefits:
- damage to sidewalk, curbs, and gutters will be eliminated or minimized;
- tree will grow well in the local climate and soil and in the available ground space;
- tree will not interfere with high voltage wires.
The process begins when a property owner requests a tree application form from the Landscape Maintenance Division. The form lists Street Tree Species Choices appropriate for your tree district. Complete the form and mail to:
Landscape Maintenance Division 16 Barnes Court - Suite 3 Hayward, CA 94544 After the form is received, the tree planting will be scheduled.
After planting, the resident will be mailed watering instructions for the tree. Other tree care is handled by the Landscape staff.
To request a Tree Application Form, please call Landscape Maintenance Division at 510-583-8906 or submit your request online.
