The Hayward Police Department recognizes the need for cooperation and collaboration with the community it serves. Community policing is a mutual effort of police, city government, community organizations, and most importantly, the people who live and work in Hayward’s residential and business neighborhoods. To be effective in our community policing efforts, we strive to combine the resources, effort and ideas of all of these stakeholders in order to identify and solve problems at the neighborhood level. The focus of all City services, including the police department, is to join forces with neighborhoods in an effort to reduce neighborhood crime and the fear of crime, and to enhance the quality of life in the community.
Since no two neighborhoods are exactly the same in characteristics and priorities, field officers recognize that a policing strategy for one neighborhood might differ from another. For this reason, in addition to their patrol beats, field officers work intensely in specific neighborhoods within their beats to coordinate problem solving strategies to positively impact the unique priorities of the affected neighborhood.
The goal of neighborhood policing in Hayward is in the spirit of the City’s quest to tailor its resources to help improve the quality of life in all neighborhoods of the City. The Police Department is invested in this quest as a viable partner in a collaborative effort to improve livability and to keep Hayward an attractive place to live, work and visit.
