Youth diversion programs are provided to decrease the number of juvenile offenders entering the juvenile justice system. Counselors from the Youth and Family Services Bureau (YFSB) work with juveniles who have been arrested, formulating a plan to prevent future criminal behavior. An example of a youth diversion program is the Petty Theft Workshop: YFSB counselors work collaboratively with police officers to educate juvenile shoplifters about the consequences of their arrest. Counselors meet with families and may arrange for community service. Juveniles who successfully complete this program are not referred to the probation department or district attorney’s office.
Other diversion programs administered by YFSB focus on helping kids with anger management and avoiding incorrigible behavior that could lead to crime and other high risk behaviors.
