The City of Hayward understands the importance of advertising and promoting a business. Each Zoning District has specific requirements for the size, type, number and location of signs permitted. A permit is required for most signs. Prior to erecting any type of signage for your business, please visit the Permit Center located at 777 B Street for additional information.

Expect as otherwise qualified, the following signs are prohibited in any Zoning District:
  • Advertising banners (except for decorative artwork, promotional event and grand opening banners, which require a temporary sign permit.
  • Pennants, flags, or emblems (except for promotional and grand opening events, which require a temporary sign permit.
  • Portable signs, including but not limited to: A-frame signs, I-frame signs, sandwich boards, stake signs, etc.
  • Inflatable and mylar balloons greater than 14 inches in diameter.
  • Permanent or temporary window signs exceeding more than 25 percent of the total surface area of any single window or door pane for each frontage.
