This category is only to be used for complaints regarding construction on a property where permits were not acquired.
The purpose of the Building Division is to enforce State and Local Building Codes and Ordinances in an effort to ensure that structures are safe for use. Please read this entire section before you repair, alter, or do any construction on your property.
Before construction can begin on a single family dwelling, or a multiple unit building the owner of the property should contact the City of Hayward Building Division to find out if a permit is applicable to the intended work on their property.
In many instances a permit is required to repair or alter the existing structure. Permits can be required whenever you’re doing work in any of the following trades: Building, Electrical, mechanical, or plumbing repairs, replacement, or alterations.
Commonly asked questions.
- Do I need a permit when I replace my water heater, wall heater, or remodel my bathroom/kitchen?
Yes.
- Can the City of Hayward still enforce construction codes if they were never advised of the work or if they find out about the construction after the fact?
Yes, but to avoid the assessment of additional fees we encourage property owners to obtain the necessary permits prior to beginning work on their property. For more information, please call Building Division at 510-583-4140
